Photo Editing - Changing Picture Backgrounds

Students Use a Photo Editor to Practice Changing Picture Backgrounds

Students will use a photo editor to change the backgrounds of several pictures.

Students will learn how to remove backgrounds and background elements using the magic wand and eraser tools.

Students learn to save their image with the erased background as a .PNG file extension to retain the transparency of the newly erased background.

Students will learn how to replace their removed background with a different background picture by layering the erased "see-through" image on top of a new background picture.

Students save their two combined layers as a new, single image.

Note: This activity requires the use of a photo-editing / graphics program that supports the use of "layers" in order to place one picture on top of another.

The free Windows program Paint.NET is used here.

Photo Editing - Changing Picture Backgrounds - Finished Example

Students insert their five chosen original images into the template's "Original Picture" column.

Students change the backgrounds of their original images and insert the changed images into the template's "New Picture" column.

In addition to learning how to remove and replace backgrounds, students will practice their file management and naming skills during this activity. Students should give their new pictures short, descriptive names. Example: cat-blue-ray-background.png

Students will learn that one of the features of .PNG image files is their ability to create tranpsarent image areas. This makes it possible to erase areas of an image like the backgrounds, making those areas "see-through". Students are able to layer those images on top of new background pictures to create a combined image with a completely different background.
