Group Video Project Blueprint

A Blueprint to Create Collaborative Group Video Projects.

Group videos can be a very engaging way for students to create and present information about various research topics. In this blueprint students are placed in small groups of 3-5 people. Students work in a jigsaw effort, each one producing a piece of the puzzle that makes the complete picture or in this case, video for their group. Each student will create their own movie using their own video clip and image(s) and the video clips and image(s) from each of their group members.

What you need:

1) Video cameras

Ideally, one per group. You can use less, more is helpful. Flip cameras work well for this and many point and shoot cameras are capable of video and audio recording.

2) Computers with video editing programs

MovieMaker for Windows, iMovie for Mac are good with low to moderate learning curves.

3) Project research handouts

Each member of the group should be assigned a different facet of the main topic to research.

4) Group Membership Sheet

A sheet listing the group members and individual research topics. This is to help remind everyone what group they belong to and what everyone is doing.

5) Group Video Project Story Board (example)

This is a visual aid to help students understand the format and structure of their group video in the movie editor.

Instructions:

1) Put the students into groups.

Assign each member a different research facet of the main topic. Put this information into the group membership sheet.

2) Start the project research.

Distribute the research handouts ensuring each student understands what part of the main project they are researching.

3) Create video clips.

Each student will create a video clip of themselves discussing what they have learned about their part of the research. They will make this clip and any image(s) available for their group members to use.

4) Create the complete movie from the clips.

Each student will create their own movie using their own video clip and image(s) and the video clips and image(s) from each of their group members.

5) Show Time

Show one or more videos from each group to the class.

You are Student #1. You will create a movie with a title clip, and then add a picture and a short video clip of your topic. You will collect pictures and video clips from each of the other students in your group and add them to your movie. You will add your ending credits clip and make your final movie.

Student #1 Name - Jaden

Student # 2 Name - Avery

Student # 3 Name - Tracy

Student # 4 Name - Jamie

This is the storyboard view on a typical video editor. This storyboard shows the sequence of clips by all the collaborating students on this project. Every student in the group makes a video using their own title, image, and short video clip along with image and short video clip contributions from the other group members.
