Common Core Opinion Writing - Lesson 4 - Dogs are Great

This first grade writing lesson plan integrates technology into the Common Core Writing Standards for opinion pieces. Students provide three reasons that dogs are great. This writing lesson gives first grade students practice writing sentences in paragraph order (first, next, last) with correct capitalization and punctuation. Students also search for appropriate clipart, and then insert and size their clipart. Students increase the font size and print and / or save their work.

Keys Learned:

  1. Shift: To capitalize the first letters of the sentences.
  2. Spacebar: To make one space between each word in the sentences.
  3. Enter: To move the cursor to the next line down after each sentence.
  4. Delete: To delete clipart as necessary.

Tips:

Model and explain each step to students. Be prepared to provide assistance and repetition as necessary. Work towards developing increased proficency, independence and mastery throughout the series of lessons.

Increase the font size before beginning writing. You can teach students how to select text and then increase the font size later in the series.

Teach the students how to use the "Backspace" and "Undo" buttons to fix mistakes.

Remind students to press the print button only once.
