This is a series of writing and word processing lesson plans designed to guide first graders from introductory typing and word processing skills to high grade level appropriate proficency, independence, and mastery.

1) Students will review important writing skills such as letter / sound recognition, left to right progression, capitalization rules, spacing between words, punctuation (comma, period, question mark, exclamation point), and parts of a paragraph: introduction, details, closing sentence.

2) Student will also practice important word processing skills such as typing, formatting text, using shift, enter, backspace, and undo / redo. Students will also practice searching for clipart and inserting, resizing, moving, and deleting clipart. Students will save and / or print.

These writing lesson plans integrate technology into the Reading / Language Arts curriculum.

Grade 1

First Grade Writing - Technology Lesson Plans

These writing technology lesson plans are in order of increasing skill and typing ability. Simpler writing lessons are first. Lessons that follow utilize a degree of overlap and repetition to provide opportunities for mastery.

To build a strong foundation of typing and writing skills, alternate traditional typing practice with these writing lesson plans.

One possible instructional pattern is to practice typing on a typing program for 2 or 3 sessions, then practice writing using these lesson plans for 2 or 3 sessions.

	Mastery Series Lesson 1 What Can Birds Do? Students open the word processor application, type three basic sentences, and insert and size one piece of clipart and add their name. Students increase the font size. Students print and / or save.
	Mastery Series Lesson 2 How do Cats Grow? Students begin practicing writing informative sentences in paragraph order using "First" and "Next". Students insert and size one piece of clipart and add their name. Students increase the font size. Students print and / or save.
	Mastery Series Lesson 3 I Like Cats for 2 Reasons Students continue practicing writing informative sentences in paragraph order using "First" and "Next". Students add and size clipart. Students increase font size to fill the page. Students print and / or save.
	Mastery Series Lesson 4 I Like Dogs for 3 Reasons Students use "First", "Next", "Last" sentences to construct their paragraph. Students add and size their clipart. Students increase the font size for better appearance and easier reading. Students print and / or save.
	Mastery Series Lesson 5 Party Invitation Students create a simple party invitation using When, Where, What. Students add and size clipart. Students increase the font size to fill the page. Students print and / or save.
	Mastery Series Lesson 6 I Like School for 4 Reasons Students use the parts of a paragraph: introduction, details, and closing sentence to construct their informative paragraph. Students add and size clipart. Students increase the font size to fill the page. Students print and / or save.
	Mastery Series Lesson 7 The Kite Students write a story about perserverance with their name in it. Students add clipart to illustrate each sentence. This lesson plan uses 3 pieces of clipart. Students increase font size to fill the page. Students print and / or save.
