Kinder and First Graders
Learn Word Processing Skills

Assignment: Students will gain word processing skills through practicing typing informative writing, narrative writing, and opinion writing. These typing assignments align with Common Core Language Arts Standards. These are helpful when teaching early writers how to use a word processor.

Often, it will be enough for students to simply copy what the teacher displays on the screen depending on length of class time. Students writing their own sentences may need word spelling assistance.

When to Start - Kindergartners and first graders can begin practicing using a word procecssor as soon as they have gained sufficient mouse and typing skills. Student readiness will vary based on many factors. Some kinder classes may be able to start near winter break, others after spring break, and some may not be ready until first grade or later.

Usage: Use your projector to display the chosen assignment for students. You might also print a few for students to see as needed. Students may copy your sentences verbatim or you may instruct them to personalize or write their own original sentences based on the writing theme.

  • Narrative Writing tells a story, real or fictional.
  • Informative Writing provides information in a logical order.
  • Opinion Writing gives the writer's opinion or view that can't be proven as fact.
