Touch Typing, Spreadsheets and Charts

Third Grade Technology Lessons focus on typing skills development and simple spreadsheets with charts (Qtr.1), coding and logic games, (Qtr.2), internet research (Qtr.3), and presentations (Qtr.4).

In the 1st Qtr, students focus on developing two hand homerow typing proficiency. Students also create basic spreadsheets with charts.

Students will learn spreadsheet vocabulary such as rows,columns, cells, data, values, and formulas. Spreadsheets may be created using a variety of spreadsheet applications from Microsoft, Google, Apple, or other similar programs.

Recommendations:

• Typing Lessons: Focus on typing accuracy, proper finger placment, not speed. Speed will be acquired naturally over time in the future months and years of typing lessons. However, if you need a benchmark of Words Per Minute typed, then I use about 5 words per minute per grade level. That means third graders aim for typing about 15 words per minute on average.
• File Distribution: Share assignment files using a cloud storage service, your school's learning management system, or a shared network drive on your school's internal network.
• Enrichment: Use the enrichment activities to support regular classroom curricula. Good for early finishers, late arrivals, supplementation, differentiation.
• Time Management: These weekly lessons are programmed for 2 weekly sessions of 45 minutes each. Adust the activity selections according to your own needs.

Third Grade Technology Lesson Schedule:

First Quarter - August ~ October

Main Topics Covered: Typing, Spreadsheets, Word Processing

9 Sessions = Typing with fingers on home row - no pecky typing

7 Sessions = Spreadsheets with charts

2 Sessions = Word Processing

Prerequisites: Internet access, spreadsheet program, word processor.

Week 1 - Qtr. 1 - Third Grade

Session 1:

Introductions | Lab Rules | Typing | Enrichment

Do Introductions: Introduction to the computer lab teacher, discuss what we will do in the lab. Spend time getting to know the students.

Review of Typing Stage 1: Demonstrate how to use Dance Mat Typing stage one, level one or your school's preferred typing program. Review the homerow and proper finger technique.

Word Processing - "My Vacation" | Enrichment

Students use a fun graphic organizer to write about their vacation

My Vacation: Make the "My Vacation" templates available to the students. Demonstrate how to write in the editable text box. Download the "My Vacation Instructions."

• Assign: "My Vacation" writing. Students write 100+ words about their vacation. Students will save / print their finished work.

Instructions: Students imagine they have a mini-zoo with several types of animals. Students use their Zoo Animals Handout to count how many mammals, birds, fish, reptiles, or amphibians they have. Students use their data to create their own spreadsheet and pie chart illustrating the number of each type of animals in their zoo.

Instructions: Students have decided to raise funds to help needy children pay for school supplies. They will make and sell fresh fruit juices and smoothies at the next important school event. Students choose at least 8 items from the Fruit Stand Shopping List for their fruit juice and smoothie creations.

Instructions: Students are holding bake sales to raise money to purchase school supplies for needy children in their community. Students choose at least 8 different items from the "Baked Sale Goods" list to sell at their bake sale. Students enter their choices into a spreadsheet and create a chart with the data.

Students: You are having a party and have invited several classmates, family members, and friends. You need to make a spreadsheet of all the fun party supplies you need for the party.

Choose at least 8 different foods, drinks, and party gifts that you think your friends will enjoy.

Instructions: Students at your school have convinced a major Halloween costume company.to donate a variety of costumes for needy children in their community. Choose 8 or more types of costumes from the Halloween Costume List to donate to the children. Add your costume choices and the quantities into a spreadsheet.Use your information to create a bar or column chart.

Students write a fun poem with a Halloween poem generator

Demo: Halloween Pumpkin Poem Generator

• Demonstrate how to enter text into the poem generator.
• Demo how to generate the poem.
• Demo how to copy and paste the generated poem into a word processor.
• Assign: Halloween Pumpkin Poem Generator

Students: Write your poem then copy and paste the generated poem into a word processor. Format the font size and style, add a border and clipart, add your name and print the poem.
