Third Grade Technology Lesson Plans

Third Graders use the technology lessons below to continue developing technology skills through typing, writing, researching, animating, photo editing and computer art.

A primary emphasis of the 3rd grade technology lessons is on expanding technology skillsets using a greater variety of applications and building in-depth computer skills in research and presentation projects.

Technology Programs Third Graders Use:

	Microsoft Word for writing sentences, short paragraphs and letters.
	Microsoft Excel-for creating a variety of spreadsheets and charts.
	Type to Learn - Typing practice with emphasis on using proper hand and finger placement on the keyboard. Develops typing accuracy and speed.
	Kid Pix - The classic and still the one of the best art programs for kids to explore and express their creative side.
	Microsoft PowerPoint - Presentation software for viewing and creating slideshows.
	Internet Explorer - For research and image collection.
	Pivot Stick Figure Animator - A simple and fun animation program that children love.
	Microsoft Media Player - For viewing and listening to video and audio files.
	Comic Life - Digital comic creation program.
	Microsoft Photostory - Make multimedia slideshows
	Paint.NET - Photo editing / painting program.
	Microsoft Calculator
	Jumpstart 3rd Grade -Educational learning games.

Timing and usage of the various programs is flexible and the order of the activities can be mixed to suit different needs and changing schedules.

Late September - Early October

Introduction - Rules of the Computer Lab - (1 session)

Introduction to the computer lab teacher, discuss what we will do in the lab. Talk about rules of the computer lab, Following the same rules as in the regular classroom. Review and practice how to logon to the computer lab server. Briefly review the names of the main computer parts such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU, server. Discuss lab activities and projects to be covered in third grade computer class.

Microsoft Excel - Making Spreadsheets and Charts. (4 -5) sessions

1) First basic Excel chart

2) Excel Chart formatting

3) M&M Excel Chart

4) Expense Budget

5) Comparison Price Shopping

November - January

City Wildlife Project (8) sessions. Goes to end of January.

Sessions 1- 2- 3 Research city wildlife animals. Finish one animal per session.

Sessions 4-5-6 Collect images of animals. Two pictures of each animal per session.

Session 7 Make a title slide and save as .png file for photostory.

Sessions 8 - 9 Insert pictures into Photostory. Narrate each picture with mic. Save and create movie.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays letters (2 sessions) in Nov. and Dec.

February

Head Switch - Imagination Unit (1-2 sessions)

Students will cut and paste their head onto a different body.
Session 1 - Students take headshots of themselves, remove the background and place it on another body.

Session 2 - Finish up and insert picture into Microsoft Word, add title and description, save and print.
