Second Grade Technology Lessons

Second grade technology lessons to learn to use Excel, PowerPoint, Word, to research on the Internet, use digital cameras and more.

These Second Grade technololgy lessons teach students to use Excel to develop multiple spreadsheets and charts, to use PowerPoint in a mini-project to create dinosaur presentations, and to use Internet Explorer for research. Students will use digital cameras in a multimedia mini-project to create digital comics and continue increasing their computer skills through typing, writing, researching, animating and computer art.

Technology Programs Second Graders Use:

	Microsoft Word for writing words, sentences, short paragraphs and letters.
	Microsoft Excel-for creating spreadsheets and charts.
	Type to Learn - Typing practice with emphasis on using proper hand and finger placement on the keyboard. Develops typing accuracy and speed.
	Kid Pix - The classic and still the one of the best art programs for kids to explore and express their creative side.
	Microsoft PowerPoint - Presentation software for viewing and creating slideshows.
	Internet Explorer - For research and image collection.
	Pivot Stick Figure Animator - A simple and fun animation program that children love.
	Microsoft Media Player - For viewing and listening to video and audio files.
	Comic Life - Digital comic book creation program.
	Microsoft Photostory - Make multimedia slideshows with images and narration.
	Jumpstart 2nd Grade -Educational learning games.

Second Grade Technology Lesson Schedule:

Late September - Early October

Introduction + Rules of the Computer Lab + Server Logon (1 session)

Introduction to the computer lab teacher, discuss what we will do in the lab. Talk about rules of the computer lab, Following the same rules as in the regular classroom. Discuss and practice how to logon to the computer lab server. Briefly review the names of the main computer parts such as monitor, keyboard, mouse, CPU, server.

October

Microsoft Excel - Making Spreadsheets and Charts. (4 -5) sessions

1) First basic Excel chart

2) Excel Chart formatting

3) Excel M&M Chart

4) M&M chart formatting

5) Excel Review

November - December

Comic Life Digital Comics - Kindness (4 sessions)

Comic Life - Students create a comic strip illustrating 5 acts of kindness.

Session 1 - Discuss kindess-demo and practice how to use comic life. Explore and learn.

Session 2 - Fill out worksheet - take pictures of students acting out kindness.

Session 3 - Continue with kindess pictures - take headshots - Begin building comic.

Session 4 - Build comics and save as pictures on server. To be used for Open House display.

Microsoft Word (2 - 3 sessions)

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Holidays letters to family.

January - Early March

Type to Learn (4-5 sessions)

Type to Learn - Review login and interface. Discuss proper finger placement on the home position. Demonstrate warm up exercise and first lesson. Discuss typing accuracy measurements and progress bar. Utilize projector and document camera if possible to project keyboard and proper finger placement while typing. Walk around class during typing session to reinforce two hand typing and finger placement. Work towards completion of lessons 1-5.

Students create a Valentines' day letter to their loved ones using fancy fonts. clipart and borders.

March - April

Research - Fossils Webquest (1 session)

This is a webquest for finding information on the internet about fossils.

Microsoft PowerPoint - All About Dinosaurs (4 sessions)

Students create a 4 slide PowerPoint about dinosaurs. They will research facts about dinosaurs and combine them with dinosaur images, sounds and motion effects.

Session 1 - Lead the children as a group to build a basic 4 slide Power Point framework with titles on each slide and save.

Session 2 - Students research dinosaur facts using handouts with some assistance. Students save completed handouts with teacher / student names on them.

Session 3 - Students add research info from the student handouts to slides. Students and teacher review slide info for accuracy and spelling. Students save their work.

Session 4 - Add motions and sounds as time permits. Save.

Alternate Lessons - Dinosaur Research (4 sessions)

Students research facts about dinosaurs. This alternate lesson plan will substitute for the PowerPoint lesson plan according to the classroom teacher's preference.

Microsoft Word - Happy Spring Break (1 Session)

Type Happy Spring Break letters. Utilize font sizes, styles, clipart, borders, printing. Should fill a single page, use good grammar and have correct spelling.

Alternate = 1 session - Microsoft PhotoStory "Why Can't We Be Friends"

Students learn to create a multimedia slideshow using pictures of schoolmates and adding music.
